Tips To Balance Your Work From Home “Life”

Isn’t awesome to work from home? I know for me it has been great! I was thinking…(Can you smell the smoke?) :) I wander if you asked my wife and kids if they would have the same enthusiasm about my home office as I do. You see, if you are like most entrepreneurs….YOU LOVE TO WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS! I know I do. I think I could spend 16 hours a day and really enjoy every minute of it….BUT WAIT! Wasn’t one of the reasons I started my own business to free up more time? It is important to balance your work from home life just like any other business venture. Sometimes I have to put that in perspective. Below are some of the areas that I feel are important for BALANCE in your home workplace.

1. Set Hours Of Operation – AND STICK TO THEM! If my wife hears me say 5 more minutes one more time…..I think she will kill me…(figuratively speaking of course…..I hope)

2. Set Aside Your Home Office Space – How many people do you know that hang around at their workplace for hours after quitting time?

3. Get Away…Get Away! – I go stir crazy alot! You need to get out of your home and get a change of scenery! I am going to San Diego this weekend….It was around 117 degrees here in Phoenix today!

Remember your goals and why you are in business. If you have a family I would bet that one of your goals is to have the freedom to spend more time with your family. Don’t ruin it by losing your balance!

I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on how you balance your work at home life!

Always balancing,

Rafael

  1. Hi Rafael – wow – is this ever TRUE! When I first started working from home I was putting in 16-17 hours a day. Getting out of the house is ESPECIALLY important – really – you will go crazy if you don’t LOLOL Great advice, Rafael!!

  2. I feel you on this on Rafael,

This was my biggest problem and sometimes still is. We just have that drive and it’s like, “I’m not getting up to I write 3 articles, then it’s watch this training, then… work on my e-mails, not to forget the time you spend chatting and talking. Yeah man, I too was a chronic work-o-holic.

My wife stop givin the “goods” for a while and well let’s just say I lightened up a bit lol. But really honestly that helped me stay focused and it actually made me more able to create content and fresh ideas because I wasn’t super duper tired every single day.

Great post Rafael I really dig your style,

  5. Hi Rafael,
Great post! Balancing your work at home life & your home life is not easy! I have a DMO ( Daily Method Of Operation) And A DHO (Daily Hours Of Operation) I simply have a certain amount of time each day I devote to work. When that time is up, I’m done! I find if I have a DMO, I get much more accomplished in a shorter amount of time.

  6. Hey Rafael,

You hit home with me in this article. I too, love working for myself but have the problem of over-indulgence ;) I can get soo focused on projects to build my business that I spend way too much time “working”! Thanks for the reminder to get out of the house and stick to a schedule! BTW.. next time you are in San Diego, we should connect for some coffee.

  7. Rafael, I had to really laugh at your 16 hours a day statement. I work about 10, because I just can’t tear myself away..so much to learn and explore. And my family is grumbling and telling me to get a life. And I tell them that is exactly what I am doing! :}
I know I need better balance for sure. Thanks for the reminder.

  8. Hey Rafael,

Dave here of DaveAndDawn. Just wanted to say great post and so important to keep this balance in your life. I’m like you though and it’s always “just give me another 5 minutes.

Actually, since we both have our iPhones, I think Dawn is even worse than me. Don’t tell her I said that though!

Thanks for sharing and I’ll try to do better ;)

  10. Rafael,

This is one of the most common problems I hear from online marketers. You’re right, most of us “do this” so we can spend more time with our families and have time freedom, but often times our families end up hating our businesses.

It’s just so easy to keep working, even after an 8 hour day “at the office” has been completed. We all must find balance and I for one am guilty as charged. Thanks for the reminder, and for the great tips!

  11. Holy crap that is hot! My friend were just out there visiting family. I hear it is a dry heat so I don’t really know how that compares to FL heat.

Anyways, the balance is, in my opinion, my biggest obstacle in business. Like you said we enjoy everything we are doing and could do it all day.

I often find myself telling my girlfriend, “Babe this project is almost done and on autopilot,” which it is, but wouldn’t you know it I find something else to work on right after that is done!

When you are programmed like us work is never “done” we have just completed our current task, the budgeting you speak about is imperative to maintain balance and sanity at home.

Thanks and have a great day!

  13. Very important point! Many times people obtain the financial lifestyle they wanted but they left out the living one. The wealth of a healthy relationship with family and friends is often neglected it balance and good time management is not included in the plan.

  14. Hey Rafael…I think that nearly everyone who loves what they do doesn’t consider it work so it is rather easy to spend long hours during the day and night “working.” I typically try to engage with my family on and off during the day but lately have had so much going on that I have not been so good at getting away from my “work.” This is a good reminder…thanks!

  16. Excellent Blog Post, Rafael. I figured I owed it to you to dig a little deeper into your blog to find something positive to say :-) One thing I’ve noticed, especially reading your “about page” is you’re an excellent writer; not everybody has that natural quality. PLUS, you provided some really good gold nuggets in this post. I appreciate what you’re offering … Keep it up Dude! Blessings, CBiz
